📘 Buyer’s guide · Updated May 2026

The best Samsung DA29-00020B compatible filter in 2026

Most-installed Samsung filter ever. Here’s how to replace it for 65% less without losing NSF certification.

TL;DR

The DA29-00020B (also called HAF-CIN, HAF-CIN/EXP, or “Samsung Filter Type B”) fits more than 100 Samsung refrigerator models from 2010 onward. The Samsung OEM costs $50. A properly NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 certified compatible costs $16.99 — same filtration, same fit, 66% less.

What is the DA29-00020B?

The DA29-00020B is Samsung’s flagship refrigerator filter cartridge, in production since 2010. It’s a twist-in carbon block filter rated for 300 gallons / 6 months (whichever comes first). Samsung sells it under multiple product codes (HAF-CIN, HAF-CIN/EXP, DA97-08006A) but they all refer to the same cartridge.

Does my Samsung fridge use the DA29-00020B?

If your Samsung refrigerator was made between 2010 and today and isn’t a 4-door flex model from 2017+, the DA29-00020B almost certainly fits. Common compatible part numbers — any of these means DA29-00020B fits:

  • DA29-00020B · DA29-00020A (current Samsung names)
  • HAF-CIN · HAF-CIN/EXP (consumer brand label)
  • DA29-00019A (legacy Samsung code)
  • DA97-08006A · DA97-08006B (cross-references)
  • Kenmore 46-9101 · 469101 (Kenmore equivalent)

If your fridge has a 4-door flex layout and the filter compartment shows HAF-QIN instead, you need our Samsung HAF-QIN Compatible. The two are not interchangeable.

Installation in 90 seconds

  1. Locate the filter compartment (usually upper-right interior of the fresh food section, behind a small flap).
  2. Twist the existing filter counterclockwise a quarter turn.
  3. Pull straight out — water shutoff is automatic, no leak.
  4. Insert the new DA29-00020B Compatible and twist clockwise until securely locked.
  5. Flush 1–2 gallons through the dispenser to clear air and carbon dust.
  6. Reset the filter indicator: hold the “Filter” button on your fridge display for 3 seconds (varies by model).

Frequently asked questions

Will a compatible void my Samsung fridge warranty?

No. Federal law (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, 1975) prohibits manufacturers from voiding warranty just because you used an aftermarket part. Samsung can refuse warranty service only if the compatible filter caused the failure — essentially impossible for a passive carbon cartridge.

Is the DA29-00020B the same as the HAF-QIN?

No, completely different cartridges. DA29-00020B = older Samsung models (twist-in interior compartment). HAF-QIN = newer 4-door flex models 2017+ (different slot, different cartridge shape). Don’t mix them up — wrong fit = water leak.

How often should I replace it?

Every 6 months or 300 gallons, whichever comes first. A family of 4 typically hits 300 gallons in about 6 months exactly. Heavy water use (lots of ice + dispenser drinks) can shorten this to 4–5 months. More on filter timing here.

What contaminants does it actually remove?

NSF/ANSI 42: chlorine taste & odor. NSF/ANSI 53: lead (≥99%), mercury, asbestos, benzene, cysts, particulates. Doesn’t remove fluoride, sodium, dissolved minerals, or PFAS specifically (need NSF/ANSI 401 for PFAS — see our PFAS guide).

How to identify which one your fridge uses

Method 1 — read your existing filter

If you have an old filter in the slot, twist counterclockwise to remove. The model number is printed on the cartridge label (LT700P, LT800P or LT1000P). This is the fastest, most reliable method.

Method 2 — check your fridge model number

The model sticker is inside the fresh food compartment (usually upper-left ceiling or left wall). LG model numbers start with prefixes like LFXC, LFXS, LMXS, LSXS. Cross-reference:

  • LT700P fits: LFXC24726S, LFXS29626S, LFXS29626W, LFXS30726S, LFX21976ST, LFXS24623S, LMXS30776S, LMXS30746S, LMXC24746S, LSXS26326S, LSXS26326B, LSXS26326W, LSXS26466S, LSSB2692ST, and 50+ other 2010-2014 LG models
  • LT800P fits: LMXS30776S (later units), LMXS30746S, LMXC24746S, LSXS26326S/B/W (2014+ rev), LSXS26466S, plus Kenmore 9490 fits
  • LT1000P fits: LMXS30796D, LMXC23796S, LMXC23796D, LMXS28626S, LFXC24796D, LSFXC2496D, LSXC22396S, LFXS30796S, LFXC24796S, LMXS30796S, LSXC22396D, LFXS30796D, and 50+ other 2017+ LG models including most InstaView and Knock-Twice models

Method 3 — visual inspection of the slot

The three filters have visibly different shapes:

  • LT700P: short cylinder, ~6.875″ long, push-twist with no collar
  • LT800P: longer cylinder, ~7″ with thicker housing, twist-lock
  • LT1000P: longest, ~8″ with newer LG locking mechanism, used on InstaView models

Are LG filters Kenmore-compatible?

Yes. LG manufactures most refrigerators sold under the Kenmore brand (since 2009). The LG filter ↔ Kenmore mapping is exact:

  • LT700P = Kenmore 9690 / 46-9690 / 469690
  • LT800P = Kenmore 9490 / 46-9490 / 469490
  • LT1000P = Kenmore 9980 / 46-9980 / 469980

You can buy either branded version — they’re identical inside.

Filter performance — are they all the same?

All three are NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 certified for chlorine, lead, mercury, asbestos and other standard contaminants. The LT1000P offers the most comprehensive coverage on some batches, with NSF/ANSI 53 + 401 certification for additional pharmaceutical and emerging contaminant reduction.

OEM vs Compatible — which to choose?

Genuine LG OEM filters cost $42–54 each. Our NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 certified compatibles cost $13.99–18.99. Same fit, same flow rate, same standard contaminant reduction. Annual savings per fridge: $58–72.

Pick OEM if: your LG fridge is brand-new and still under premium warranty, or you specifically need NSF/ANSI 401 (PFAS/pharmaceutical) coverage. Otherwise, the compatible is the smarter financial choice.

Are Compatible Refrigerator Filters Safe? The NSF-Certified Truth (2026)

Are aftermarket compatible refrigerator water filters safe? The honest answer with science: how NSF/ANSI certification works, what to look for, and the marketing tricks to avoid in 2026.
[1]

🔬 Honest answer · No marketing fluff

Are compatible refrigerator filters safe?

Yes — but only if certified. Here’s how to tell the legit cartridges from the bulk-import junk in 60 seconds.

TL;DR

Yes — properly NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 certified compatible filters are as safe as OEM. They use the same activated carbon block media. The catch: ~70% of “compatible” filters on Amazon and Walmart are NOT actually NSF certified. Below: how to verify, what marketing tricks hide, and what NSF certification actually proves.

The short scientific answer

A refrigerator water filter is fundamentally simple technology: water flows through a cylinder of compressed activated carbon. The carbon adsorbs (binds) chlorine, organic compounds, lead and other contaminants while letting water through. The OEM cartridge from Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, etc. uses exactly the same activated carbon as a generic compatible — often produced in the same Asian factories.

What differs between OEM and compatible:

  • The plastic housing (must match the fridge slot exactly)
  • The brand markup (OEM: 70-80% margin; compatible: 30-40%)
  • Certification documentation (the OEM is always NSF certified; compatibles vary)
  • Sometimes minor differences in micron rating or flow rate

What NSF certification actually proves

NSF International is an independent, accredited US lab (founded 1944, no government affiliation) that physically tests filters against published standards. To get certified, a filter must:

  1. Pass live water tests — challenge water with known contaminant levels run through the filter, then measured at the output
  2. Demonstrate measurable reduction per the standard (e.g., NSF/ANSI 53 requires ≥99.5% lead reduction from 150 ppb input)
  3. Pass material safety — the housing plastic must not leach BPA, phthalates or other contaminants into your water
  4. Be retested annually by NSF — pulled from real factory production lines

Filters that pass get an NSF certificate number you can verify at info.nsf.org/Certified/DWTU. Look up the manufacturer + model — if it’s not in the database, it’s not actually certified.

Marketing tricks to watch for

⚠️ Red flags in compatible filter listings:
  • “Tested to NSF standards” — meaningless. Anyone can claim this. Actual certification reads “NSF/ANSI 42 Certified” with a verifiable certificate number.
  • “NSF logo” without standard number — visual deception. The NSF logo alone doesn’t certify anything; the standard number (42, 53, 401) is what counts.
  • “Removes 99% of contaminants” — undefined claim. Which contaminants? Tested by whom? Reputable filters list specific reductions per contaminant (e.g., “≥99.4% PFOA reduction”).
  • No certification PDF on request — if the seller can’t email you the cert document, it doesn’t exist.
  • Outrageously cheap ($3-5 per filter on AliExpress, mass Amazon listings) — these are typically uncertified bulk imports made of low-grade carbon that may not actually filter anything.

How to verify a compatible filter in 60 seconds

  1. Look at the seller’s product page. Does it list specific NSF/ANSI standards (42, 53, etc.) with cert numbers — not just “NSF logo”?
  2. Search the NSF database. info.nsf.org/Certified/DWTU → enter the manufacturer name → does the product appear?
  3. Email the seller asking for the lab certification PDF. Reputable sellers send it within 24h. If they refuse or vanish, it’s a red flag.
  4. Read the warranty. Real compatible sellers offer fit guarantees and return windows (we offer 365-day returns + $1,000 wrong-fit guarantee). Junk sellers offer none.

Will a compatible void my fridge’s warranty?

No. The federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (1975) explicitly prohibits manufacturers from voiding your warranty just because you used a third-party part. Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, etc. can refuse warranty service only if they can prove the aftermarket filter caused the failure — which is essentially impossible for a passive filter cartridge.

Manufacturers love to imply otherwise in their marketing (“only OEM filters preserve your warranty”), but it’s a scare tactic. Read your warranty fine print — it almost certainly doesn’t actually require OEM filters.

When OEM is the right pick anyway

For most kitchens, NSF-certified compatibles are the smart financial pick. But there are 4 cases where OEM makes sense:

  • RFID-aware fridges (newer GE Café, GE Profile post-2017 with XWFE) — the RFID handshake works only with chipped cartridges. Most reputable compatibles now also have RFID chips, but check the listing.
  • Premium luxury appliances (Sub-Zero, Wolf, La Cornue) — manufacturer warranty terms can be stricter; OEM avoids any dispute
  • NSF/ANSI 401 for pharmaceuticals/PFAS — most compatibles cover 42 + 53 only. If you specifically need 401-rated filtration, the OEM is often the only option
  • Active warranty period — for the first 1–2 years on a brand-new fridge, sticking with OEM avoids any risk of warranty argument

Bottom line

NSF-certified compatible refrigerator filters are safe, effective, and represent the best value for 95% of US households. The 5% edge case where OEM matters: RFID-paired fridges, luxury brands under warranty, or specific PFAS/pharmaceutical filtration needs.

The risk isn’t “compatible vs OEM” — it’s “certified vs uncertified”. A $3 Amazon mystery cartridge with no NSF cert is genuinely dangerous and should be avoided. A $12-15 NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 certified compatible from a reputable seller delivers identical filtration to a $48 OEM. We sell only the latter.

EDR1 vs EDR2 vs EDR3 vs EDR4 vs EDR5 vs EDRA

Six filters, six different fridges. Here’s how to instantly know which one is yours.

TL;DR — find your filter

Every Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana or JennAir refrigerator uses one of these six filters. The number on your current cartridge — or the model number on the fridge sticker — tells you which. Below: full comparison + decision flow.

The 60-second decision chart

Filter Fridge type Form factor Common alt names Compat $
EDR1RXD1 French-door, side-by-side (interior compartment) Square-end push-in W10295370A · Filter 1 · 4396163P $14.99
EDR2RXD1 Bottom-freezer Whirlpool / Maytag Twist-in cylinder W10413645A · Filter 2 · UKF8001AXX $13.99
EDR3RXD1 Older side-by-side (2009-2014) Long cylinder push-twist 4396841 · 4396710 · Filter 3 · P1WB2 $11.99
EDR4RXD1 French-door (interior wall) Short twist-lock UKF8001 · Filter 4 · 46-9006 $13.99
EDR5RXD1 Bottom-grille (older Kenmore + Whirlpool) Slim cylinder, narrow 4396508 · 4396510 · Filter 5 · NLC240V $10.99
EDRARXD1 Side-by-side with Filter A slot (interior right) Push-twist, oval base Filter A $13.99

Decision tree by fridge type

Step 1 — locate your filter

Most Whirlpool-family refrigerators have the filter in one of three places:

  • Top right of the fresh food compartment (interior wall) → likely Filter 1, 4 or A
  • Inside the door → Filter 2 or 3
  • Bottom grille (front bottom of fridge) → Filter 5

Step 2 — read the cartridge label

Pull out your existing filter (twist counterclockwise, no water spills — automatic shutoff). The number printed on it tells you exactly which EDR you need. If illegible, look at the slot — the filter slot itself often has a “Filter X” label.

Step 3 — cross-reference your fridge model

If you can’t find an old filter and the slot has no label, your fridge model number (sticker inside the fresh food compartment, ceiling or door frame) maps to a filter. Email us your model at contact@discountfiltershop.com — we’ll tell you within 24h.

Why six different filters? It’s mostly business, not engineering

From a pure filtration standpoint, all six EDR cartridges use the same activated carbon block media and remove the same core list of contaminants. The reason there are six is fridge slot design — different generations of Whirlpool refrigerators have different slot geometries to lock you into branded refills. The cartridges themselves are nearly identical inside.

This is also why NSF-certified compatible cartridges work perfectly — the filtration tech is generic; only the plastic housing has to match the slot.

OEM vs Compatible — quick math

Whirlpool charges $42–54 per OEM filter. Replacing every 6 months = $84–108/year per fridge. Our NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 compatibles average $11–14 each = $22–28/year. Annual savings: ~$70–80 per fridge, with the same lab-verified filtration.

Need both options? We stock OEM and Compatible for every EDR

Each EDR filter is available on our site in both the genuine Whirlpool everydrop OEM (full warranty + NSF/ANSI 401 in some batches) and our NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 certified Compatible (75% cheaper). Pick what fits your priorities — both are real, both are tested, both are backed by our $1,000 wrong-fit guarantee.

PFAS in US Tap Water: The 2026 Guide to Filters That Actually Remove Forever Chemicals

PFAS detected in 45% of US tap water. Learn which NSF-certified refrigerator filters actually remove forever chemicals (PFOA, PFOS, GenX) — and which marketing claims are bogus.
[1]

⚠️ Public health · Updated May 2026

PFAS in tap water — and how to actually filter them out

A USGS study found PFAS in 45% of US tap water samples. Here’s what works, what doesn’t, and what the EPA’s 2024 rule means for your kitchen.

⚠️ TL;DR — what the EPA confirmed in 2024

PFOA + PFOS now have enforceable EPA limits of 4 parts per trillion (ppt) each. Most US utilities are years away from compliance. The cheapest interim defense is a refrigerator/pitcher filter certified to NSF/ANSI 53 + 401 — most basic carbon filters do not remove PFAS.

What PFAS are (in 30 seconds)

PFAS = Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances. ~14,000 synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s in non-stick cookware, food packaging, firefighting foams, waterproof clothing and stain repellents. They don’t break down in nature (hence “forever chemicals“), they accumulate in the human body over decades, and they’ve been linked to cancer, immune suppression, hormonal disruption and developmental issues in children.

The 2 most studied are PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) and PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate). Both are now banned in US manufacturing, but they linger in groundwater for centuries.

The 2024 EPA rule that changes everything

In April 2024, the EPA finalized the first-ever federal drinking water standards for PFAS:

  • PFOA + PFOS: 4.0 parts per trillion (ppt) each — enforceable
  • PFNA, PFHxS, GenX: 10 ppt each
  • Mixture index: combined PFAS hazard score ≤ 1.0

To put 4 ppt in perspective: that’s 4 grains of sand in an Olympic-size swimming pool. The EPA gave utilities 5 years (until 2029) to comply. Until then, contaminated water keeps flowing. A USGS study published in Environmental Science & Technology in 2023 found PFAS in 45% of US tap water samples.

What you should do today

  1. Find out if your utility has tested for PFAS. Use our free city water-quality report tool — enter your ZIP and you get an instant readout of your local utility’s latest contaminant data, pulled from EPA’s SDWIS database.
  2. If PFAS is detected (or your utility is in a hot zone), filter at the tap or fridge. Boiling water doesn’t remove PFAS. Standard pitcher carbon filters typically don’t either. You need certification-verified PFAS reduction.

NSF certifications that actually mean PFAS reduction

Standard What it covers PFAS reduction?
NSF/ANSI 42 Aesthetic — chlorine, taste, odor No
NSF/ANSI 53 Health-related — lead, cysts, mercury, MTBE, asbestos Sometimes (PFOA only, recent additions)
NSF/ANSI 401 Emerging contaminants — pharmaceuticals, pesticides, BPA, phthalates No (separate)
NSF P473 PFOA + PFOS specifically YES — purpose-built
NSF/ANSI 53 (PFAS amendment 2020+) PFOA + PFOS reduction (≥99.4%) YES if certified post-2020

The most reliable certifications for PFAS removal in 2026 are NSF P473 (specifically designed for PFOA/PFOS) and NSF/ANSI 53 amended for PFAS reduction. Always check the actual NSF certificate — manufacturers can claim “tested to NSF standards” without ever filing for certification. Real certificates are searchable at info.nsf.org/Certified/DWTU.

Refrigerator filters that remove PFAS

Among the major OEM cartridges, these have published PFAS reduction data (≥99% reduction of PFOA + PFOS):

  • everydrop EDR1RXD1, EDR2RXD1, EDR3RXD1 (Whirlpool family) — NSF/ANSI 53 + 401 certified, PFOA/PFOS reduction
  • everydrop EDR4RXD1, EDRARXD1 — NSF/ANSI 42 + 53, PFOA reduction
  • Frigidaire WF3CB and EPTWFU01 — NSF/ANSI 401 (some batches)
  • Samsung HAF-QIN (DA97-17376B) — NSF/ANSI 53 + 401
  • LG LT1000P — NSF/ANSI 53 + 401

Compatible filters from us cover NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 — they reduce many contaminants but PFAS is not the strongest point. If your utility shows PFAS above EPA limits, choose the OEM cartridge that includes NSF/ANSI 401 for maximum protection.

Pitcher / countertop alternatives

If your refrigerator doesn’t have a built-in filter, the most reliable PFAS-rated countertop options are:

  • Berkey Big Berkey + PF-2 fluoride/PFAS post-filters — gravity-fed, no NSF cert but extensive third-party PFAS data
  • Aquasana Clean Water Machine — NSF P473 certified for PFOA/PFOS
  • Brita Hub (newer model) — NSF/ANSI 53 + 401, PFOA-reduction certified
  • ZeroWater — TDS-based filtration, removes >99% PFOA/PFOS in independent tests

What if I have a private well?

You’re more exposed than utility customers. Wells aren’t tested or treated for PFAS by default. Test your well water annually for PFAS through a state-certified lab — typically $250–$400 per panel. If detected above 4 ppt, install a whole-house carbon filter system with PFAS-rated cartridges.

Bottom line

PFAS contamination is real, widespread, and the EPA timeline to fix it at the utility level is 5+ years. The cost of protection at home is modest: a $15-50 refrigerator filter rated for PFAS reduction filters drinking and ice water for 6 months. Use our free ZIP-based water report to check your local utility’s PFAS levels first, then pick the right cartridge.

MWF vs MSWF: Which GE Refrigerator Filter Do I Actually Need?

MWF vs MSWF GE refrigerator filter comparison. Different cartridges, different fridges. Quick visual + fitment chart to identify which one your GE fridge needs in 60 seconds.
[1]

⚡ 60-second decision guide

MWF vs MSWF: which GE filter do I actually need?

Two different cartridges, two different fridges. Don’t buy the wrong one.

TL;DR — 10-second answer

MWF = older GE fridges (pre-2011), short white cartridge with single-letter code. MSWF = newer GE side-by-side and bottom-freezer fridges (2007+), longer cartridge with twist-lock collar. They are not interchangeable. Wrong pick = water leak.

Visual difference at a glance

If you can see your filter compartment, the easiest test is physical:

Feature MWF (SmartWater) MSWF
Length ~7″ short cylinder ~10″ longer cylinder
Connection Push-twist (no collar) Twist-lock with raised collar
Fridge era 2003–2010 GE refrigerators 2007+ side-by-side & bottom-freezer
Filter life 6 mo / 200 gal 6 mo / 300 gal
Flow rate 0.5 gpm 0.9 gpm (faster)
Common alternates MWFP, MWFA, GWF, GWFA, HWF, Kenmore 9991 101820A, 101821B, MSWF3PK, Kenmore 9914

The 60-second identification flow

  1. Look at your refrigerator’s model sticker (usually inside the fresh food compartment, top-left ceiling or door frame). Note the model number — it usually starts with G, P, or Z for GE.
  2. Cross-check the manufacture date. If your fridge is 2010 or older, you almost certainly need MWF. If it’s a 2011+ side-by-side, you most likely need MSWF.
  3. Look at the filter compartment — if you see a cartridge already in there, compare its length and collar to the table above.
  4. Still unsure? Email us your model number and we’ll tell you which one fits in under 24h.

Common GE refrigerator models — which filter

MWF fits these GE models (representative sample): GFE26GMHES, GFE26GSHSS, GNE25JSKSS, GNE26GMKES, GFSF6KKYABB, PSE25KSHCSS, PFCS1NJWSS, GSE25GSHSS, ZIS480NRH, and 100+ others. Compatible with most GE refrigerators 2003–2010 and many through 2014.

MSWF fits these GE models: PSHS6YGZBESS, PCE23VGXAFBB, PCF25NGWAWW, PSC23SGNABS, ESH22XGPBCC, GSE23GSESS, GSS23WSWASS, ZISS480DXSS, and most GE side-by-side and bottom-freezer refrigerators 2007 and newer.

Which is better at filtering?

For raw NSF certification coverage, both filters are NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 certified — they remove the same core list of contaminants (chlorine, lead, mercury, asbestos, benzene, cysts, particulates). The MSWF has a slightly higher gallon rating (300 vs 200) and faster flow rate, which makes it the superior cartridge if your fridge supports it. But you can’t put an MSWF in an MWF slot — the connection is incompatible.

OEM or compatible? Both options

For each, we stock both genuine GE OEM and NSF-certified compatible alternatives:

Bonus: GSWF and XWF — same brand, different cartridges

If your GE fridge is even newer (2014+), you might actually need GSWF (long-life 750-gallon) or XWF / XWFE (RFID-aware) instead. These are easy to confuse — see our brand guide for full details.

Every order ships with our $1,000 wrong-fit guarantee. If we (or you) pick the wrong cartridge, full refund + we ship the correct filter free.

The best EDR3RXD1 compatible filter in 2026

NSF-certified, fits Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid, JennAir — without paying $48 to the OEM.

TL;DR

The EDR3RXD1 (also sold as everydrop® Filter 3, Whirlpool 4396841 / 4396710, P1WB2) is one of the most common refrigerator filters in the US. The Whirlpool OEM costs $48, but a properly NSF/ANSI 42 + 53 certified compatible costs $11.99 — same filtration, same fit, 75% less. Below: how to verify compatibility, what NSF certifications actually matter, and our top pick.

What is the EDR3RXD1?

The EDR3RXD1 is the part number Whirlpool gave to its Filter 3 cartridge in 2014. It’s a twist-in carbon block filter rated for 200 gallons / 6 months (whichever comes first). It replaces the older 4396841 and 4396710 filters and fits dozens of Whirlpool-family refrigerators including Maytag, Amana, KitchenAid and JennAir models.

Does my fridge use the EDR3?

If your refrigerator was made by Whirlpool (or any sister brand) between 2009 and today, and the filter compartment shows a Filter 3 label or you’ve ever bought an “everydrop EDR3” replacement, you’re in the right place. Common compatible part numbers — any of these means EDR3 fits:

  • EDR3RXD1 · EDR3RXD1B (the official current names)
  • 4396841 · 4396841P · 4396841T (legacy Whirlpool numbers)
  • 4396710 (older sister cartridge — same fit)
  • P1WB2 · P1WB2L (PUR Quantum branding)
  • everydrop® Filter 3 (consumer brand name)

If you see UKF8001 or EDR4, you don’t need EDR3 — see our EDR4RXD1 Compatible page instead.

OEM vs Compatible — what’s the real difference?

Criterion Whirlpool OEM EDR3 Our Compatible EDR3
Price $48.00 $11.99 (75% less)
NSF/ANSI 42 ✓ Certified ✓ Certified (same lab)
NSF/ANSI 53 ✓ Certified ✓ Certified (same lab)
NSF/ANSI 401 (pharmaceuticals) ✓ Some batches — (not yet)
Filter life 6 mo / 200 gal 6 mo / 200 gal
Manufacturer warranty Whirlpool 1-yr $1,000 wrong-fit guarantee + 365-day returns

The honest gap: NSF/ANSI 401 coverage (pharmaceutical reduction) is held by the Whirlpool OEM in some recent batches. If you specifically need pharmaceutical filtration, the OEM is the safer pick. For chlorine, lead, mercury, asbestos and 30+ standard contaminants, the compatible delivers identical performance at a quarter of the price.

How to verify a “compatible” is really NSF certified

This is where 80% of Amazon listings fall apart. Real NSF certification means:

  1. The certificate number is searchable on the NSF database (info.nsf.org/Certified/DWTU)
  2. The seller can email you a PDF of the lab report on request
  3. The packaging shows the NSF logo with the standard number(s) printed (not just “tested to NSF standards” weasel-wording)

If a seller can’t produce any of those three, walk away — the cartridge is uncertified bulk that may not actually filter anything.

Frequently asked questions

Will an EDR3 compatible void my Whirlpool warranty?

No. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act (US federal law since 1975) prohibits manufacturers from voiding your warranty just because you used an aftermarket part. Whirlpool can refuse warranty service only if they can prove the compatible filter caused the failure — which is essentially impossible for a passive carbon cartridge.

How often should I replace my EDR3?

Every 6 months or 200 gallons, whichever comes first. A family of 4 typically hits 200 gallons in about 5 months. If your water has high sediment or you live somewhere with very chlorinated municipal water (most of the South & Midwest), replace at 4–5 months. More on filter lifespan here.

Why is the OEM 4× more expensive?

Whirlpool sells filters as a high-margin recurring revenue stream. They built the filter slot to lock you into branded refills. Compatible manufacturers can’t use the Whirlpool name but produce the cartridges in the same factories, then sell direct to retailers like us at a fraction of the markup.

Are compatible filters tested for PFAS?

Most are not specifically tested for PFAS reduction. If PFAS is your priority (and it should be — use our free city water report tool), look for filters with NSF/ANSI 53 + 401 certification. The EDR3 Compatible covers 42 + 53 only; for full PFAS reduction we recommend NSF/ANSI 401 cartridges.

What’s the difference between EDR3 and EDR4?

Different physical fit and different fridge models. EDR3 fits older Whirlpool side-by-side and bottom-freezer fridges. EDR4 fits newer french-door models. Check your manual or read our EDR4 Compatible page for fit details.
