Kenmore refrigerators use filters from LG, Whirlpool, or Frigidaire — here’s how to replace them all
Kenmore doesn’t manufacture its own refrigerators — they are made by LG, Whirlpool, and other brands under the Kenmore name. This means your Kenmore water filter is often the same as an LG or Whirlpool filter with a different part number. This guide covers the most common Kenmore filter models.
Common Kenmore filter models at a glance
- Kenmore 9980 — same as LG LT1000P, 2018+ models
- Kenmore 9690 — same as LG LT700P, 2010–2018 models
- Kenmore 9081 (PH21240) — Whirlpool-based models
- Kenmore 9083 (PH21250) — Whirlpool-based models
- Kenmore 9999 — same as Frigidaire ULTRAWF
How to replace a Kenmore 9980 or 9690 (LG-based models)
- Open the refrigerator and find the filter in the upper-right interior.
- Turn the old filter counterclockwise a quarter turn and pull it out.
- Insert the new filter, align the tabs, and turn clockwise until locked.
- Flush 2 liters of water before drinking.
- Reset the filter light by holding the reset button for 3 seconds.
How to replace Kenmore 9081, 9083, 9084, 9490 (Whirlpool-based models)
- Locate the filter in the upper-right corner of the refrigerator interior.
- Turn counterclockwise about a quarter turn and pull the filter straight out.

- Press and hold the filter reset button (usually labeled “Filter” or “Ice/Water”) for 3–5 seconds.
How to replace Kenmore 9999 (Frigidaire-based models)

- Turn counterclockwise and pull out.
- Insert the new filter and turn clockwise to lock.
- Flush 2 liters and reset the indicator.
How to find your exact Kenmore filter model number
The easiest way is to pull out your existing filter and read the sticker — it will say the Kenmore model number (e.g., 9081, 9980) and often the compatible part number (e.g., PH21240, LT1000P). If the fridge is empty, look at the model sticker inside the door frame and search it alongside “water filter” to find the right replacement.
