MWF vs MSWF: Which GE Refrigerator Filter Do I Actually Need?
Two GE filters, two completely different cartridges
GE has used several filter platforms over the years, and MWF and MSWF are the two that buyers confuse most often. The names differ by one letter, but the cartridges have different shapes, different housings, and fit different refrigerators. Ordering the wrong one means a filter that simply will not lock in.
How to tell which one you need in 10 seconds
Open the fresh food compartment and look at where your current filter sits:
- Cartridge hangs vertically from the back ceiling, behind the top shelf: you need the GE MWF.
- Slimmer cartridge in a housing at the top front of the compartment: you need the MSWF.
- Cartridge sits in the upper-left area and your fridge is from 2019 or later: you likely need the XWF or XWFE instead. See the note below.
The safest confirmation is always the part number printed on the current cartridge label.
GE MWF: the long-running workhorse
The MWF is GE’s most widely used filter platform, fitted to millions of GE side-by-side and French-door refrigerators. Over the years GE has sold it under several revision names: MWF, MWFP, MWFA, MWFAP. All fit the same housing.

GE MSWF: the slim design for late-2000s models
The MSWF appeared around 2008 for a generation of GE refrigerators with a slimmer filter housing at the top front of the compartment. If your GE fridge dates from roughly 2008 to 2012 and the MWF cartridge looks too bulky for your housing, the MSWF is almost certainly your filter.

Owners of newer GE fridges: read this before ordering
GE refrigerators made from roughly 2019 onward use the XWF or XWFE platform instead. The XWFE contains an RFID chip that the refrigerator reads. On GE models manufactured from 2020 onward, a cartridge without a valid chip can trigger a “Replace Water Filter” error and shut off the dispenser. For those models, only the genuine GE XWFE is a reliable choice.

Frequently asked questions
Are the MWF and MWFP the same filter?
Yes. MWFP, MWFA, and MWFAP are revision names for the same MWF platform. They all fit the same housing, and retailers ship the current revision regardless of which name is printed in your manual.
Can I put an MWF in an MSWF housing?
No. The cartridge bodies and mounting systems are different. An MWF will not seat in an MSWF housing, and forcing it can damage the housing. Always match the part number on your existing cartridge.
My GE fridge is from 2021. Is MWF or MSWF right for me?
Neither. GE models from roughly 2019 onward use the XWF or XWFE platform. If your model was manufactured in 2020 or later, choose the genuine XWFE so the built-in RFID verification works correctly.
How often should I replace a GE refrigerator filter?
Every 6 months, or sooner if flow slows noticeably or the indicator light comes on. The carbon media loses effectiveness over time even with light use.
