What PFAS are, and why they are in your tap water
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a family of thousands of synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s in non-stick coatings, firefighting foams, and water-resistant textiles. They are nicknamed “forever chemicals” because they do not break down naturally: once they reach groundwater, they stay there.
In 2023, the US Geological Survey published a study estimating that at least one PFAS compound is present in about 45% of US tap water samples. In 2024, the EPA finalized the first national drinking water limits for several PFAS compounds, including PFOA and PFOS, citing links to health concerns at very low exposure levels.
Can a refrigerator filter actually remove PFAS?
Yes, with an important condition. Dense activated carbon block, the media used in quality refrigerator filters, can adsorb PFOA and PFOS effectively. Reverse osmosis membranes reject them as well. The condition is verification: carbon quality varies enormously between manufacturers, and only independent lab testing tells you whether a specific cartridge actually performs.
The certifications that matter
- NSF/ANSI 53 with a PFOA/PFOS reduction claim: the key standard for refrigerator and under-sink carbon filters. The claim must be listed explicitly on the performance data sheet, not implied.
- NSF/ANSI 58: the equivalent standard for reverse osmosis systems.
- NSF/ANSI 401: covers emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and BPA. A useful companion certification, but not a PFAS certification by itself.
You can verify any certification independently by searching the filter model number in the public listings of NSF International, WQA, or IAPMO.
Marketing claims to distrust
- “Removes 99% of PFAS” with no named certifier: an in-house test is not independent proof.
- “NSF certified” without a standard number: NSF 42 alone covers chlorine taste and odor, not PFAS.
- “Filters forever chemicals” on uncertified budget cartridges: without third-party data, there is no way to know what the carbon actually captures, or for how long.

Frequently asked questions
Does boiling water remove PFAS?
No. Boiling concentrates PFAS slightly as water evaporates. Filtration through certified activated carbon or reverse osmosis is the effective household approach.
Is bottled water PFAS-free?
Not necessarily. Bottled water is not systematically tested for PFAS, and several studies have detected PFAS in bottled brands. A certified filter on your own tap gives you verifiable, ongoing protection at a fraction of the cost.
How often should I replace a filter used for PFAS reduction?
Follow the certified capacity, typically 6 months or the rated gallon volume, whichever comes first. Carbon adsorption capacity is finite: an exhausted cartridge stops capturing PFAS long before water tastes any different.
Do all NSF 401 filters remove PFAS?
No. NSF 401 covers emerging contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and BPA. PFOA/PFOS reduction is certified under NSF/ANSI 53 (or 58 for reverse osmosis) and must appear as an explicit claim on the filter’s performance data sheet.
