GE refrigerators are in more American homes than any other brand — and the right filter makes all the difference
GE has produced four main refrigerator water filters over the past two decades. Choosing the right one for your model ensures effective filtration, proper fit, and no voided warranty. Here’s your complete 2026 guide.
GE MWF — the most popular GE filter
The GE MWF (SmartWater) is the bestselling GE filter, fitting the vast majority of GE refrigerators made between 2005 and 2016. Also sold as MWFP and MWFA — all three are identical.
- NSF 42 + 53 certified
- 6-month / 300-gallon life
- Twist-in installation, upper interior
- If you have a GE fridge from this era, start here
GE XWFE — best for 2018+ GE refrigerators
The GE XWFE is GE’s most advanced filter, required by all GE refrigerators made from 2018 onward. It contains a built-in RFID chip that communicates with the fridge’s electronics — non-genuine filters without the chip will trigger error codes.
- NSF 42, 53 + 401 certified — GE’s highest certification level
- Reduces 50+ contaminants including pharmaceuticals and microplastics
- 6-month / 170-gallon life
- Must use genuine GE XWFE for compatibility
GE GSWF — highest capacity GE filter
The GE GSWF has exceptional 750-gallon capacity — far more than MWF or XWFE. It fits older GE models and is the right choice for large families or high-usage households with compatible fridges.
- NSF 42 + 53 certified
- 6-month / 750-gallon life
- Best for high-volume households with older GE fridges
GE MSWF — fastest flow rate
The GE MSWF has the fastest flow rate in the GE lineup at 0.9 gpm, versus 0.5 for the MWF. It fits select GE side-by-side models and is a good choice when dispenser speed matters.
- NSF 42 + 53 certified
- 6-month / 300-gallon life
- 0.9 gpm flow rate — the fastest GE filter
Which GE filter is right for you?
Check the part number on your current filter. If your fridge is from 2018+, you need the XWFE. If it’s from 2005–2016 and the filter is in the upper-right interior, you almost certainly need the MWF. If you want maximum capacity and have an older compatible fridge, consider the GSWF.
