What the RFID chip actually does

The chip does not filter anything. It is an authentication tag: the fridge reads it to confirm a GE-sanctioned cartridge, tracks gallons through it, and disables or throttles dispensing when the check fails. Filtration itself comes from the carbon block, which is identical in format between XWF and XWFE. That is why the chipless route is purely an electronics question, not a water-quality one.
